The key subjects – assessment, sequencing of work and aeration to mowing, aeration and line marking, plus more – are studied through a progressive one-day GMA Learning course. With delivery from an industry expert, experience an educational hands-on training day featuring a productive presentation, plus turf care theory and practical working demonstrations. In addition, you will also receive a Certificate of Attendance. (Food and drink are provided).

This Level 1 course provides groundsman with an introduction to the basic knowledge of racecourse maintenance. Develop, demonstrate, and apply the skills required to maintain, present and renovate the racing surface before, during and outside the racing season. This course is designed to be of equal benefit to a person working in a small team on a racecourse, as a person working as one of a larger team. On completion of this course you will also receive a Certificate of Attendance. This course is worth 10 CPD points / 10 CPD hours.

Delivered by an industry expert, make better informed decisions to determine the effectiveness of your maintenance. This course has been developed by the Grounds Management Association in conjunction with The Racecourse Association Limited. (Food, drink & accommodation is provided).

Some of the key subjects:
• Health and safety requirements - the course
• Rooting media and its construction
• Evaluation of nutrient analysis records
• Assessment and identification for grass species
• Pesticides available to assist in the maintenance

Why should I participate in this course?
This Level 2 course will demonstrate and apply the theory required to understand the science of racecourse grounds maintenance. The course is designed to be of equal benefit to the person working alone in a small racecourse club, as it is to a person working as one of a larger team. On completion of this ground step, and following an exam, you will also receive a Certificate of Achievement. This course is worth 25 CPD points / 25 CPD hours.

Level 3 Racecourse: Management Skills

Explore aspects of turf culture which are applied in managing a racecourse surface.

What is involved within this course?
The key subjects – health and safety, pesticides and tools, plus more – are studied through a progressive three-day GMA Learning course. Delivered by an industry expert, make a better informed decision in order to determine the effectiveness of your maintenance. This course has been developed by the Grounds Management Association in conjunction with The Racecourse Association Limited. (Food and drink are provided). 

What does the course content cover?
Some of the key subjects:
• Communication skills within the racecourse
• Leadership within the grounds department
• Management of major events
• Legislation for tools and equipment
• Funding availability for improvement

Why should I participate in this course?
This Level 3 course quantifies the supervisory and managerial skills required by the groundsman to manage and control the resources on the racecourse. Plus, demonstrate the management techniques and processes required by the groundsman to produce a safe and consistent racing surface. On completion of course you will also receive a Certificate of Attendance. This course is worth 15 CPD points / 15 CPD hours. 

What can I do after this course?
To further build on the GMA route, undertake the Level 3 GMA Technical Diploma in Turf Surface Management – or Level 3 GMA Supervisory Management – providing formal qualifications in different aspects of turf management. These qualifications may be beneficial for people who have completed other courses at Level 3 who wish to further develop their understanding of the technical aspects of turf management or leadership and management skills. No practical work is involved with these qualifications.

Level 2 Grounds: Maintenance & Management  

Explore maintenance and management requirements to improve surface outcomes at independent schools

What is involved within this course?
The key subjects - good working practices, turf standards, risk assessments, to basic equipment requirements, plus more are studied through a progressive one-day GMA Learning course. Delivered by an industry expert, this will provide you with an overview of the knowledge and understanding needed to carry out a range of effective turf maintenance and turf management practices. In addition, you will also receive a Certificate of Attendance. (Food and drink are provided). 

What does the course content cover?
Some of the key subjects:
• Standards in turf management
• Protection and the use of Risk Assessments
• Weeds, pest, diseases and grasses
• Maintenance requirements
• Impact of latest pesticide legislation

Why should I participate in this course?
This Level 2 course has been specifically designed for independent schools. The course helps provide a focused overview of the core areas of turf maintenance and management involved with looking after grounds, playing fields and sports pitches. It will provide you with ideas for reflecting on your current maintenance practices and whether different working practices and approaches might help in improving the effectiveness of available resource use. This course is worth 5 CPD points / 5 CPD hours. 

What can I do after this course?
To further build on the GMA route, enhance your learning by taking your next step with our Level 3 Grounds: Management one-day course, and depending upon your requirements, undertake the Level 2 Certificate in Turf Surface Maintenance, the Level 3 GMA Technical Diploma in Turf Surface Management – or Level 3 GMA Supervisory Management – providing formal qualifications in different aspects of turf management. These qualifications may be beneficial for people who have completed other courses at Levels 2 or 3 and who wish to further develop their understanding of the technical aspects of turf management or leadership and management skills. No practical work is involved with these qualifications.

Level 3 Grounds: Management 

Create the ideal grounds management plan for your independent school

What is involved within this course?
The key subjects - carrying out a site audit, how to develop an appropriate work programme and budget, the need to communicate findings to senior management, plus more are studied through a progressive one-day GMA Learning course. Delivered by an industry expert, this is a course which explores and discusses the needs of the management of a school's grounds and shows how this can be achieved. In addition, you will also receive a Certificate of Attendance. (Food and drink are provided). 

What does the course content cover?
Some of the key subjects:
• Undertaking a site audit
• Standards: Actual v Expectations
• Managing effectively and efficiently
• Budget, support and work programme
• Effective communications

Why should I participate in this course?
This Level 3 course has been specifically designed for independent schools and as a direct progression course from the Level 2 Grounds: Maintenance & Management. The course helps you to consider the wider picture of what is needed to manage a grounds - including amenity and sports surfaces as well as ornamental plantings. Being able to create a formal management plan which clearly identifies the work required, resources needed and budget to meet the needs of defined standards plan is an essential part of helping senior management make well-informed decisions regards grounds management. This course is worth 5 CPD points / 5 CPD hours. 

What can I do after this course?
To further build on the GMA route, undertake the Level 3 GMA Technical Diploma in Turf Surface Management – or Level 3 GMA Supervisory Management – providing formal qualifications in different aspects of turf management. These qualifications may be beneficial for people who have completed other courses at Level 3 who wish to further develop their understanding of the technical aspects of turf management or leadership and management skills. No practical work is involved with these qualifications.
